Web Sites

Now that we covered the commercial online guides, "kick back" and explore Portland with Sandy Herring, creator of At NationMaster you will find hundreds of links to sites that give you insight into Portland's soul it is full of demographics information.  If you believe that a picture is worth a thousand words, visit Andrew's Home Sweet Home site.  He has some beautiful pictures of Portland as well as the Oregon coast.  If you like outdoor activities, go to Matthew Weaver's site. Matthew tells us that he has "developed a great affinity for the amazing natural sites here and in Washington."  Much of this Web site are "virtual tours" of his travels and mountaineering adventures in the Pacific Northwest. As a bonus, his site has tours of all 30 Major League Baseball Parks.

The Neighborhood Notes Web site launched makes it easy for neighbors to stay informed about what’s going on in our city, in our neighborhoods, on our blocks. The site connect people with resources (like civic information, local businesses and organizations, community events), and provide them with the tools to make proactive choices within our city.

  • The Neighborhood Notes homepage is populated by the most current commentary, news and events from all Portland neighborhoods.

  • The quadrant pages (NW, SW, NE, SE, N, E) are populated by the most current commentary, news and events from a specific quadrant.

  • The neighborhood pages are populated by the most current commentary, news and events for each individual neighborhood.

Here are other Web sites to explore:

  • Bookslut  Who among us has not wished for a literary concierge? Someone to tell us, “Read this, skip that”? Fortunately, there’s Bookslut to help us from wading through the drivel.

  • Kids in Portland   This site provides a resource for parents to come together and find out all of the attractions, restaurants, activities, ideas, issues, art, music, for kids in the area.

  • Made by Joel  Joel Henriques designs crafts and toys for young children but these aren't ordinary playthings. They're stylish, simple and here's the best part easy for even the most uncrafty of parents to replicate. The site shares how-to videos, photos of his work and simple instructions for his crafts. He offers free templates of his creations, including one called Paper City, a black-and-white drawing of a skyline and figures that can be cut out and used for storytelling.

  • Oregon Fly Fishing  Fishing reports, conservation news, fishing advice, and hot fly patterns.

  • PDX.FM  In Portland, the city with quirks, pdx.fm fits in perfectly.

  • Portland Architecture  If you're interested in buildings, this is the site to visit.  RSS feed and newsletter.

  • Portland Upside  A volunteer-driven publication that is dedicated to finding and printing the positive stories of the Portland, Oregon, metro area.

  • Republic of Cascadia  If we Oregonians, Washingtonians and Northern Californians were in charge, what would we do? We'd leave the United States to its own self-created woes and build Ecotopia, our independent utopian society.  Maybe British Columbia would join us.

Portland Story Project

What's your story? Photo courtesy of the Portland Story Project. When it comes to telling people about your hometown, often an anecdote means more than all the maps and guidebooks put together. The Portland Story Project is an online collection of written tales about what it’s like to live in Portland.

It was started in early 2005 by a couple who prefer to remain anonymous. He goes by the name “M” and is from New York whereas she is “C” from Florida. They get five or six submissions a week, including a lot of pictures. Most of the stories are not just anecdotes but also the sort of prose one reserves for love letters.  As of mid March 2008, the site was not up so the project may have been cancelled.
