Money Magazine Names Portland as Best Place to Live

Portland Tops Money Magazine Best Places to Live in the US for 2000
|
The selection appears in the December issue of Money magazine. Last year, New York and San Francisco shared the honors, but the magazine cited the urban growth boundary, Silicon Forest, and good schools in handing Portland the top stop.
Money editors said they were impressed with Portland as being a "minimetropolis and with short, easy-to-stroll blocks renowned for their java joints, brewpubs, and bookstores." They also cite a mass transit system that is the envy of many cities. The magazine points out that Portland is surrounded by natural beauty, sitting in the shadow of snow-capped Mount Hood and a short drive from the majestic Columbia River Gorge.
The Pearl District ranked as one of the top neighborhoods along with Irvington, Multnomah Village, and Sellwood. To learn more about these neighborhoods visit CityView.

Portland Streetcar Taking Shape - Visit Portland Streetcars Web Site To Learn More
|
Portland's colorful streetcars are being built in Plzen, the Czech Republic. Five cars are due to be delivered in late February 2001. The route, which runs between Northwest Portland and Portland State University, opens July 20.
For many years, citizens agreed that there was one thing missing - a convenient way to get from one neighborhood to another. The idea of a circulator - a transit service that would help people move through the Central City - first emerged in the 1972 Downtown Plan. For more than a decade, groups of citizen volunteers have been exploring what this circulator should look like and how it should operate. Soon it will be a reality.

2001 Oregon School Reports Cards
|
Oregon schools earned better grades from the state Department of Education than last year in report cards issued on January 18, 2001.
"The higher ratings on our second annual report cards reflect higher test scores, higher attendance and lower dropout rates," said state Superintendent Stan Bunn. "There is more we must do to make all students successful, but let's celebrate the fact that Oregon schools are good and getting better."
This year, 98 percent of Oregon schools were rated satisfactory or above, prompting questions whether grade inflation was at work. Bunn denied the state is going easier on schools.
